The Effects of Sterculiae Lychnophorae Semen on Antipyretics, Anti-inflammation and Discharge of Phlegm

Abstract
Objectives: Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen is not frequently used in Korean clinical situation, but can be used for curing acute sphagitis caused by fever in lung, etc., because of its antiinflammatory effect. The present study examined the Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen¢¥s antipyretic and antiinflammatory effects on larynx, and discharge of phlegm, for the purpose of developing a recipe effective for sphagitis and bronchitis.
Methods: Oral administration of the Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction was conducted to white rats. Specifically, after inducing the rats to be feverish by injecting LPS(l0Vg LPS/kg body weight) of Serratia marcescens into caudal vein of them, rectal temperatures were taken to prove antipyretic effect. After inducing the rats to be edematous by injecting 0.1 ml of 1% carrageenin into hind paw, the volumes of hind paw were measured to prove antiinflammatory effect. In order to testify its effect on the discharge of phlegm, after administrating the decoction to rats, the quantity of mucous in their throat were measurd. In addition, by aspirating 250ppm of sulfur dioxide for two and half hours a day during 12 days, rats were induced laryngopharyngeal infections. Then administrating the decoction since the 5th day of gas inhalation, the numbers of leukocyte were figured for the purpose of identifying microbial infections.
Results: 1. Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction had antipyretic effects on pyrexia induced by LPS injection.
2. Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction had antiedematous effects on edema induced by carrageenin injection.
3. Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction did not influence the structure of normal mucous tissue in their throat.
4. Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction had an effect on inflammation induced by exposure to sulfur &oxide.
Conclusion: Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen decoction had strong antipyretic, and antiedematous, and antiinflammatory effects on larynx. This imldys that Sterculliae lychnophorae Semen can be used to cure sphagitis effectively.
